Thank you The Straits Times for the review of our concert Quantum State (1st Mar, sun, 7pm, Esplanade Recital Studio). The science (of the sub-atomic world) that we can't fully yet understand (unlike classical physics) has inspired the music in this concert. In a way it is apt - so much of what is unexplainable in our world - human connection, love, the ability to dream, to create art itself even feel like mysteries closer to the behaviour of particles and atoms. The same way that music is mathematical and logical fundamentally, how it moves us is nothing short of a mystery, and basically inexplicable.
In this spirit of wonder, and with a desire to explore and imagine something new and beyond, this concert was created collaboratively, in a significant way, with the musicians I am fortunate enough to have worked with more than two decades, classical violinist Wu Bingling, Carnatic violinist Lazar T. Sebastine and jazz saxophonist Teo Boon Chye.
Embracing the musical diversity we have as a quartet has allowed us to discover endless possibilities in the music, often combining composition with improvisation, drawing ideas/concepts from each musical tradition - from jazz, classical, indian music to film score. With so many perspectives available to us and open minds, I could create pieces which are like living systems / wave functions - ever-changing, evolving every time we play them. It is indeed a privilege to be able to create this way time and again as a composer.
A big thank you to Rachel Kuah (from The Esplanade Co Ltd) for doing an amazing job with the live mix for our concert - this was possibly the best we have ever sounded in the Recital Studio, Alice Neo for the unwavering support on-site (and off) and Jeff Wong for the sound advice (as always).
All of you made this concert experience possible. Thank you.
